Education Sector Update - January 2024

As we navigate the dynamic landscape of New Zealand's education sector, it's essential to stay informed about the latest trends and changes.

Here's a quick update on some significant developments that might interest you:

  1. University Funding Boost: The NZ government has recently injected a much-needed NZ$128 million into our universities (1).
This timely support will enhance degree-level teaching, with a 4% subsidy increase in 2024 and 2025. It's a step towards maintaining excellence in higher education.

  2. Tertiary Fee Regulations Set for 2024: The Minister of Education's confirmation on fee regulations for 2024 reflects a commitment to accessible and adaptable tertiary education. This is part of the government's broader efforts to support the tertiary sector (2).

  3. Free Digital Technology Resources: Starting from 2024, New Zealand students will have access to free digital technology resources, including coding and web-design teaching materials. This initiative is aimed at enhancing digital literacy and skills among students (3).

  4. Curriculum Refresh: The New Zealand Curriculum is undergoing a refresh. Key changes include the implementation of the Literacy and Numeracy pilot programs, the public release of Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories (ANZH) and Te Takanga o Te Wā (TToTW) content, and updates to various learning areas like Social Sciences, English, Mathematics & Statistics, Science, Arts, and Technology. These updates are part of a broader effort to make the curriculum more bicultural and inclusive, with implementation timelines extended to give schools and teachers more time to adapt (4).

At SAARA, we believe in 'finding a way' through challenges. These updates represent opportunities for growth, innovation, and excellence in the education sector.

Let's embrace these changes and continue to work towards a future where education is adaptable, inclusive, and reflective of our core values.

Stay tuned for more insights and updates!
